What you will learn
  • Run a pre-trade checklist that ties back to each chapter
  • Rehearse the basic positions in the practice sandbox
  • Know the next step, Options Strategies

You began this course at the very idea of an option, a right without an obligation, and you have arrived at the four basic positions, the forces that move a premium, and the honest ways options lose. One step remains before real money: to gather everything into a checklist you can run before any trade, and then to rehearse it where mistakes cost nothing.

A pre-trade checklist

A pre-trade checklist: a clear view, a strike and expiry that fit it, risk sized to the premium, a planned exit, and a rehearsal in the sandbox first.
A pre-trade checklist: a clear view, a strike and expiry that fit it, risk sized to the premium, a planned exit, and a rehearsal in the sandbox first.

Run these questions before any options trade. Each is a chapter of this course in one line.

  1. What is my view, and over what time frame? A direction alone is not a trade; you need a move of a certain size within a certain window.
  2. Which position fits the view: a long call, a long put, or a defined-risk sell? Match the tool to the view.
  3. What is my maximum loss, in rupees, per lot, and is it a small, pre-decided slice of my capital?
  4. Where is breakeven, and is the move it requires realistic in the time I have?
  5. Is implied volatility high because an event is looming, and am I overpaying for it?
  6. How fast is time decay working against me each day?
  7. What is my exit, both if I am right and if I am wrong?
  8. If this is a stock option, what happens at expiry, and will I close before delivery?

If you cannot answer these, you are not ready to place the trade. You are ready to practise it.

Then rehearse it in the sandbox

Reading about options and trading them are different skills, and the gap between them is exactly where beginners lose money. Niota's app lets you close that gap safely. In the practice sandbox you can place these positions, watch the premium move with the price, the clock, and volatility, and see both the payoff at expiry and your live profit and loss, all without risking a rupee. Rehearse each basic position there until the mechanics and the forces are second nature.

A few rehearsals worth doing: buy a call and watch theta bleed it on a day the stock sits still, so you feel time decay directly. Buy a protective put on a holding and watch it cushion a fall. Sell a covered call and see how it caps both your risk and your upside. And watch a premium around a simulated event to feel the volatility crush for yourself. Each one turns a chapter you read into something you have felt.

Where to go next

When the four basic positions and the sandbox feel routine, the next course, Options Strategies, shows how to combine calls and puts into spreads and other defined-risk structures that shape risk and reward more precisely than any single option can. It is the natural next step, and it builds directly on everything here.

What to carry forward

Options Basics ends where practice begins. You have a pre-trade checklist that folds the whole course into eight questions, and a sandbox in which to rehearse the four basic positions until the mechanics and the forces of price, time, and volatility are familiar in your hands, not just in your head. Trade small, respect the risks this course kept returning to, and treat preparation as the edge it is. When you are ready, Options Strategies is the next step.
